2000 V70X/C Female put wrong key in ignition

Post by cujowoof »

Hey all...I have the older V70, she has a V90. They have identical looking keys, and although I painted them differently to avoid the potential of putting the wrong key in the wrong car....well, you can guess where this is headed.

She put the wrong key into my V70, causing the interlock to kick in, which happened on Saturday. This morning I get in to go to work, and it still seems as though the interlock is in effect. Can't turn ignition, nothing comes on.

I disconnect the battery for 15 minutes, and when I put the correct key in the ignition, I do get the chime, and interior dome lights illuminate, but I still can't turn the key at all.

What do I need to do to get my car running again?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!!!!

The interlock is an electrical thing that prevents the car from starting but it doesn't prevent the key cylinder from being turned. It is possible that the cylinder itself got broken in the process of trying to turn the key but that really isn't likely.

Try to move the shifter and/or the steering wheel and see if the cylinder doesn't work again. The steering wheel can put pressure on the key cylinder interlock and the shifter has a mechanical cable that keeps the car from being shifted out of Park if the key isn't in and turned to position II. The shifter cable can hang up as well.

Changing out the key cylinder in the 70 series cars is a bit of a PITA since it was installed with a break away screw that you need to drill out. It is also expensive if you want the keys to match.

Try some anti-seize such as:
https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-80078-An ... B000AAJTXY

Run your key in and out swiftly to loosen things up. Use the metallic or copper stuff not the greasy looking ones.

Before trying that, I'd suggest either Volvo lock oil (9437450) or Houdini lock lubricant -- both of these are non-fouling lubricants that both clean and lubricate. This definitely sounds like the steering wheel lock is keeping the cylinder from turning--happened to me on more than one occasion. Hopefully turning the wheel left or right while attempting to turn the lock will get it to move.
