99 s70 T5 Ignition switch causing issues ?

Post by gentlejax »

My switch has been slowly failing for a while.

I have been able to start car and the radio nor the wipers would work till I slightly turned the key back. then the radio powers up and wipers work if I need them.

Well the other day my car died about 60seconds after cranking. took a while to restart. then it ran fine.

I put a new fuel filter in it and ran fine. for a while.

the other day I noticed my interior dash lights were not working nor were the lights that light up the a/c controls. I hadnt noticed before cause I rarely drive at night.

I also noticed I am sometimes getting a loud buzzing electical sound through my stereo when I start it until I "adjust" my key in the switch.

Car acted up yesterday again. I got it home and read about the fuel pump relay. I removed the relay and replaced it with a jumper wire as I read on here and car immediately started and ran till I shut it off. has run fine ever since with the jumper wire.

I ordered a new switch (electrical portion) and I should get it really quick.

so could the switch have caused all these problems ? the fuses are all good. headlights work . just not the dash lights. I may have extra dimmer switch at home.

the noise thats related to ignition position and the stalling/no starting sound like the ignition has finally gone bad. I will see in next day or so.

Yes, interior lights are also probably related to the ign. switch - my car has done the same thing there. I'm not sure about the running issue.

I thought it was dimmer switch at first but then the ignition going south makes me beleive its causing all the issues I am having. will see in next day or so if the ship that switch out like they should.

Replaced the switch and dash lights are still not coming on..the dash lights and the lights on the AC controls..the button lights on the controls work..just not the lights that light up the rest of the AC control panel..and the dash lights..all off..

I put in a different dimmer switch but it could have also been bad.

what wires do I jump to get the dash lights to come on so I can fine out if its the switch? what fuse or relay do I need to check? I checked all the fuses but I could have missed one. I had read there is a relay on some models for the lights. headlights work just fine.

Are you driving around with a jumper in the fuel pump relay connection?

You could have a bad head light switch.

No I'm not driving around with fuel relay jumpered... I replaced ignition switch last night.

I did drive it jumpered for a few days but not any more.

I guess I can try another headlight switch. Does it just pop out too?

I can't recall if I have an extra or not off that .

Is there a relay on these 99 s70 t5 models ?

I have tried 3 headlight switches and 1 dimmer. Still no luck

Either a fuse somewhere or a harness issue.

I guess I need to pull speedo cluster and see if anything has happened. Originally I thought bulbs but no way all dash bulbs died along with the A/C controls lights

Need ideas fast. It's hard to drive when it dark. Can't see my speedo

Tilt the steering wheel up/down and see if it's a shorted wire in the steering column causing this. I've heard of it before.

glove compartment light was out and the fuse under hood was blown.

last time I removed my aftermarket radio was not long ago prior so I removed it again and checked and tapped up anything that could make anything bad happen.

fuse lasted a few days but its blown again.

not sure how I am going to track this down short of pulling apart the dash again. at least the top pad
