97 850 ignition switch issues

Post by smokestack »

Hey guys, my car seems to have a tricky ignition switch. The key fits ok but I have to adjust it after starting the engine to be able put it in gear and then the speedometer is always iffy, any ideas?

This is a super common problem, the electrical portion of the ignition switch has failed.

Part number is 9447803, you may want to shop around (even Amazon sells them, use the MVS Amazon link!), but for example: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 60-9447803

As noted a common problem. My 96 850T needs the key jiggled or turned back ever so slightly for the headlight, brake lights, and turn signals to work. The speedometer is also hit or miss. When it's cold outside the speedometer works fine, warms up and not speedometer. And of course the odometer broke at 70K, so I have no idea how many miles are really on the car. I plan to replace the ignition switch at some point.

Are you thinking of the PNP switch? Ignition switch not sure I would bother but I can see you possibly could. It's just such a safety issue, too.

Changing the electrical portion is totally unrelated to the key. Check the links I posted up there.
