2005 s60 White smoke out tailpipe.

Post by Volvo-Shadow »

I am thinking it is the head gasket but I am not sure. I last drove my s60 on Saturday in the morning from work and there no signs of problems. It sat Sunday and Monday till 4:30 pm, I started it up and did it warm up the cycle it does from 1.5 rpm to idle. I then went to leave the house and about 2 house down I noticed light white smoke which I thought was vapor since it still cold out and when hit the main road it made a James Bond smoke screen I quickly pulled in over. I checked the oil and coolant level were normal, as it was off smoke was still venting out of the tailpipe. I notice little spatter of oil by the filler cap and when I opened it had little pressure release. I then drove it back home which about 2 blocks or so. Opened hood again (intense smoke all the way back) sounded like sizzling sound coming from the turbo area and smoke was in the hood area. No check engines it wasn't sluggish till I got in the driveway and proceeded to back in. Could this be a turbo failure or head gasket, these I my guesses. Also the smoke smelled like oil. Thanks for your help I just need a direction to go towards because I searched but I did not find anything to fit my issue.

We'll I asked my mechanic neighbor he thinks a going turbo and/ or the pcv clogged some oil getting pushed past seals. Must been an oil build up since the car did not blow smoke again when I drove it to his garage. One of repair data bases suggest cleaning ports in the oil pan how many tubes of Volvo gasket sealer would be required to reseal the pan?

If I'm not mistaken, you shouldn't have any pressure when you take the oil cap off, you should have a slight vacuum. PCV system seems to be a major needed maintenence item on P2 platform. There is lots of info about this, just check google.

Ironically I actually ordered the pcv kit from ipd before this happened. My car at 88k I heard it was recommend at 100k so I thought I was doing preventive maintenance and that I had time to do it this summer but it looks like my car beat me to it. I never had any big issues with car till yesterday only issue current is evap leak which was not urgent.

I found this about the oil pan if the ports got clogged by pcv being clogged but only says use Volvo gasket and $37 a tube I didn't want buy 2 and have go to waste wasn't sure If it has expiration date if I used rest at another time in the distant future.
