1997 850 abs module/pump removal questions

Post by thedancingfiddle »

Hi all,

I think my earlier post about this either didn't make it up or got deleted because I accidentally used bad grammar. My sincere apologies for that!

I'm having trouble getting my ABS module off, and the short of it is that it looks like I might have to remove the whole abs pump. Does anyone know if it is possible to get the pump moved or rotated without disconnecting the brake lines?

I have a 1997 NA 850 wagon with no TRACS and about 140k miles.

Thanks for your help!

- Cedar

You dont have to remove the pump to remove the ABS module.

Yes, I know that is usually not the case - here is the problem:

I got 3 of the bolts out no problem, but one of them is stripped and the E5 socket is useless on it. I tried cutting a slot in the head with my dremel, and after much swearing and breaking two cutting wheels gave up on that. Now the head is more botched up than ever, and it is no closer to coming out.

The bolt in question is the lower one towards the front of the car. I had a whole mirror system rigged up to see it while trying to use the dremel, but no luck.

My mechanic has looked into it as well, and we've pretty much tried everything short of moving the abs pump.

Try hammering a smaller socket onto the deformed torx head, those things usually aren't torqued that hard. Its better to use your sweat to figure out how to get at that one stripped bolt than remove the pump to get at it.

Ok thanks for the suggestion! I was also thinking of maybe using gorilla glue or something to affix a socket on there - I'd be definitely willing to sacrifice a socket to get this thing off!

Use a mirror to see what you are doing and grind the head of the bolt off. The top of the case is real thick around that area and you likely won't breach the case itself.

Yes, that's what I did. I used a dremel with a long flexible extension and cut the head off. Took a long time and I thought it would never work. But it did.

I had a mirror rigged up when I was attempting to cut a slot with the dremel. So I could go that route again. But if I grind the head of the bolt off, how then do I get the bolt out? Is the threaded part of the bolt only in the pump unit and not in the module?

Oh, and also, any recommendations for what type of grinding bit to use in the dremel?

Thanks!
