Hey guys I am new to Volvos. I have an 02 s60. On the dash the outside temp reads -40 all the time. I also have a message on the dash that says engine performance loss. Check engine light comes on about a week after clearing the codes!! I pulled 4 codes out of the ecm.
201A-Thermostat
1100- Outside Temp sensor
5200-revolution Per Min Sensor
6805- Turbocharger Control Vale
first the thermostat the car warms up great an always has heat. Doesnt over heat or not heat up. I assume the outside temp sensor is due to the dash reading -40 all the time? The other 2 codes i am lost as what to look for or where to start!!! Sometimes the car takes quite a bit to start. Cranks for a bit then starts. Also while driving the car at times the engine goes into limp mode. I pull over shut it off wait a min and start it back up an go on my way. I have read that the mass air flow sensor could be causing this?? Not sure where to start with this? Does one code throw the others? Or do i have many problems? Where do I start!!!!! Any help would be great as it needs to be inspected soon!!!! Thanks guys!!!!

Welcome to the forum;
How many miles on the clock (I would assume at least over 100K), is it a 2000 or 2002?
With this many codes, I would first check for electrical issues like a bad engine management relay. It could cause a lot of hick-ups.
The MAFS you can clean easily by yourself if it has never been cleaned before.
The outside Air Temp Sensor is located in the RH side mirror and is wired into the Door Control Module. Before you replace it you want to make sure the contact pins are OK.
For the ECM201A code, see this thread:

Before dealing with the other codes (TC Ctrl and RPM), do you know what maintenance was done to the car this far?

Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

it is an 02 sorry for the confusion!!!! 167,xxx miles on it. I have cleaned the MAFS around 2-3 months ago when this problem (the engine going into limp mode while driving). Only seemed to work for a little while before it started again to happen more frequently. Not often like 1-2 times a month. Hasnt in a while. I assume since i cleaned it and it has worked but still does it on occasion that its bad????? Not 100% sure of the past service history. Start with the relay and see what happens? I see that it looks like im gonna have to replace the thermostat. No way around it?
I did take the spark plugs out last fall to look at them and they looked good..Looked to be replaced recently. After putting them back in i did notice the harder starting. Car runs great so im not sure how checking the plugs could effect the starting? Car started easierbefore looking at the plugs!!!

Thermostat is easy to do and quite inexpensive.
While removing/re-installing the plugs it is possible to have disturbed something else (like a vacuum line) - look at the small elbow fittings at the air filter near the MAFS, see if they are both properly attached.
To check the engine management relay, you could swap it with the head lights relay - they are identical - and you can drive like that. Also, inspect the ground connections all around the engine block.

Some models/trims in 2002 and then all engines 2003+ have the new thermostat housing. It contains the coolant temp sensor and the thermostat all in one assembly. You must replace the entire thing if you have this style ($100). In addition you need to pull the power steering pump to get access to it.
Otherwise you can just pull the rad hose off and pop a new one in for $10.
