2002 S40 Multiple codes, won't idle

Had no issues this morning. On the way home, got a check engine light and car would die when stopped. It will run when you keep your foot on the gas and above 1000 rpms. Codes are :
P0508
P0245
P0445
P0031
P0037
P2401
P0505

Car has 220,000 miles and other than some oil leaks, it has run very nicely till now. The car has had a good deal of non-Volvo repairs done to it and some are rather iffy - the headlights are wired together as one side was not working (nice) and other similar "fixes". I have a scanner and when I attempt to clear the codes, the lights turn off very briefly and come back on. With this many codes, I suspect that there is an electrical issue. Any thoughts? Ideas?

Cleaned idle air control valve and it will now idle at about 550 rpm. Still have the codes though. Might be time to go poke around in the junkyard again :-)

Did you attempt to clear the codes after cleaning the idle air control valve?
Some of those codes stored may be old fault codes as they are variable in nature.
I.e. evap emission control system purge valve, turbo wastegate solenoid, o2 sensor etc.

Did clear codes. They came back immediately. 20A fuse for engine sensors is blown as well. As soon as you turn the ignition on, it blows the new fuse. I'm at a loss as this thing ran perfectly until last Tuesday. It's miley and has oil leaks but it's never had any issues with running poorly.

Maybe try resetting the ECM.
Disconnect battery -ve terminal for about 30 minutes. Then reconnect.
That might clear the stubborn old codes.
Worth a try at zero cost, just have your radio security code handy to reset that.

Nope, time to grab a wiring digram and trace the circuit of whatever is blowing that fuse. Simply clearing the codes and resetting the ECM will not cure the electrical issue you obviously have. Swedish rats/mice are always to blame for electrical misfortunes on these cars. :wink:

Un plug the heated nipple on the hose right in front of turbo inlet. FOllow the hose from air cleaner down to turbo to find it.
The heated nipple shorting is common on these and when that fuse blows it doesn't run good and sets a bunch of codes. I don't know which P codes as I see them as Volvo codes on VIDA.

Where in texas? The heated nipple is for preventing the vapors from crankcase which can have a lot of moisture from freezing. You may not need to worry about the heated nipple being replaced. It sets no codes for it being unplugged. There is no diagnostics on that part.
