V70 stuck in park and won't turn on

Post by shelhancox »

I have had my v70 2002 for only one week. bought from very reputable dealer with flawless service history. Drove it fine this morning then parked in the driveway. Went to put the car away in the garage and it will not start. All the dash lights go on (no battery problem) but will not turn past the 1 position to ignition. Also the auto shift will not budge out of park either. Have tried everything i can think of and my husband too including trying the other keys, turning on and off, locking and unlocking the car, depressing brake pedal etc but no luck.

the brake lights are working.

When you try to turn it on there is a slight clock/click noise coming from the gearbox with tiny vibration when you have your hand on the shift lever

if you press brake pedal down with position 1 you can replicate the noise

if you press the brake pedal down and then try to turn on there is no noise at all, but still can't shift out of park or turn on.

really stuck - no way to move car from the driveway, it's 30th December so no mechanics open, and our nearest Volvo dealer is an hour's drive away over a mountain. Does anyone have any idea what could cause it??? Please help

Try moving the steering wheel and see if you can get it out of park...the steering wheel and the "P" are related. Try also pushing the gear shift UP further into park...if that doesn't get it, then I think to the dealer it is.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestions. Tried them but to no avail. I guess it's the dealer on Wednesday for us. At least we bought the car with mechanical breakdown insurance. Still we are feeling very sad after only one week as we really love everything else about this car!

I suspect the PNP switch. Were you ever able to get codes read from your OBD II port?

Just on a whim, it could also be the car's security system. You might try from outside of the car, locking and unlocking the car twice with your key and then using your remote to unlock it before getting in and starting it up. I have heard strange electrical glitches with the locking mechanism (especially from the key FOB) that actually keeps you from starting the car. Essentially the car thinks that someone is trying to steal her and keeps anyone from starting her up. Good luck, but this is worth a try before going to the dealer.

Hmm. Just went and tried that but no luck. I don't have a code reader unfortunately. When I turn to position 1 i get only the airbag light plus the odometer and trip meter stuff. no other lights cos it won't go past that position. oh well, 2 days till the mechanic opens!!! thanks for your help. :)

PNP sw. on an 02? Hmmm!
You really MAY have a dead battery. You can still have enough for lights but not enough for much else

I also think it is something with the steering wheel lock. Sometimes, especially if your on a hill the steering wheel locks the key switch and it is hard to turn the key. Hold you foot on the brake and really turn the steering wheel hard hard hard and hold it in that position and try turning the key, You have to take the pressure off the steering lock mechanism

just an update - apparently the barrel in the ignition lock thing has failed so we now must wait 3-4 weeks while a new one is coded for our keys and sent out to New Zealand from Sweden :( very depressing start to Volvo ownership. also very frustating after only 45,000 kilometres of driving. fortunately we have mechanical insurance which has agreed to cover all the cost (the part alone is $865 NZD plus labour)

Wow...I never would have imagined that that was the problem. This is the first I've heard of it on P2 wagon. Anyway, I'm glad you're getting it sorted and that you'll get it fixed for free. It does suck though that it's going to take so long. The reason for the extra cost and time is due to the immobilizer for the car being paired with the ignition switch.
