2006 S60R P0089 fuel pressure regulator performance

Post by LuckyLukeS60R »

Hello, so here is my problem. Have a 2006 volvo s60r with automatic 6speed tranny. I have a CEL p0089. If i reset it using a generic scanner it stays in pending. As soon as i press gas pedal the Check engine lights up or if I turn on and off car. What I tried so far. I swapped out fuel pressure sensor with same kind and swaped out PEM same kind from a working 2005 s60r and no difference. I also hooked up a pressure gauge to fuel rail and found a reading of about 40psi and if i press gas pedal the psi shoot up high then back down to 40psi. The car has 84xxx miles. Originaly this started to happen around 60xxx miles and was intermitten maybe 1 time a month. I was able to reset code and it would stay clear. Then a few thousend miles later it started to be more frequent like every other week. Then every other day. Finaly stuck in pending. Any ideas what to try? I also replaced fuel filter with a dealership filter for specified model. Any help would be awsome. Need to pass emisions and i am unable to do so I believe because check engine light is on.

Normal fuel rail pressure is 400 kPa (58 psi), at least on non-R models. You likely have a bad fuel pump.

Yes, 40 is low and the signal to PEM is exceeding the normal level so the ECM sets the fuel pressure control problem code.

Ok. So I went ahead and rechecked it again to be 100% sure. At idle the fuel pressure test guage shows 42psi and about 300kpa. Also the needle moves each direction about half a psi. If I press gas pedal thier is no difference in pressure. If I floor the gas pedal the needle jumps around 2 psi between 40-45psi. This car had its fuel tank droped once. Chances are thier might be debree of some sort.

Im told that 42psi or 300kpa on a gauge connected to the fuel rail with a fluctuation of 2-3psi while driving is correct. Looks like pump is working then.

VIDA says that for B5254T4 engine, used in S60R, fuel line pressure is 480 kPa absolute or 380 kPa relative. Even if your gauge shows relative (to atmosphere) pressure, it should be reading 380 kPa.

300 kPa is a relative pressure for B5254T2 you can find in XC70 and 2.5T S60/V70.

So either you don't have R, or gauge is way off, or there's a problem with fuel supply. What was a reason for fuel tank to be dropped? Try to replace fuel filter, it is a simple job and good thing anyways. FF is located near right rear wheel towards front of car.

Fuel tank was droped because this is a rebiult vehicle. Had a rear collision. Yes it is 100% a S60R. This is my car. Originaly I never had this problem. When it started to throw the code for p0089 I was able to clear itand it wouldnt show for a month. Then it got more frequent over time like it would show every other week. Then every week. And finaly its to the point were its in pending if you clear code. I already tried replacing fuel filter with volvo dealer filter not aftermarket. I replaced the fuel pressure sensor and replaced PEM with no results. What would you try doing next? Need help because of emission test.

Hi, can you check out my post and comment. I'm thinking at this point it may be a micro-crack in the fuel line...This is for XC90, but has a similar problem...
