1994 850 5 speed Alternator Dead

Post by shaker_chi »

I was driving from St. Louis to Chicago on Thursday and I was celebrating that I just turned 200,000 on my 1994 850 5 speed. Less than 15 minutes later all the gauges in my car were dead and I was coasting off the expressway. Walked a few miles bought a new interstate battery and made it home the last 75 miles. Turns out my alternator finally crapped out. I was looking online and saw some brands other than Bosch. Since my Bosch lasted 200,000 miles I am leaning towards O/E. Any thoughts on this?

Buy OE!!!! Any aftermarker rebuilds are terrrrible for these cars. I've seen most after market alternators crap out after 10k so if you feel like doing the job again buy aftermarket. Otherwise buy the same part it came with online :)

There was a post in the last ten days about alternators. In that post was discussion about the regulators. If you can pull the regulator and see if your brushes are worn to nubs. In the regulator pictured you can see one of the brushes is shorter than the other. Put in new regulator and alternator works perfect.

Congrats on the 200,000 miles. Did the battery light ever come on?

From what I have read, most people go with the Bosch.

And finally I would check this out if it is close by you, inspect the brushes and slip ring by popping off the back cover (or ask seller to send you pics?):
