2002 S80 how to remove the crankshaft pulley?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 S80 how to remove the crankshaft pulley?

Post by covenant »

Hi, I'm working on the timing belt replacement. I already removed the balancer and the 30mm nut, but need to remove the pulley. The space is kind of tight for a general crank pulley puller, is there any trick or specical tool needed for this removal? Thank you for any reply.

From the top of the engine, put a pry-bar between the plate, and the nut un the tensioner. It pops right off.

I've tried this with a standard 2 arm puller and there's not enough room. You need to use a puller like this to do it right without mucking up the pulley:

I used a neighbors set and the pulley came off very easily.

Have you undone the 4 10mm bolts?

You don't need to remove the crank pulley as it stays on the engine during belt replacement. Take a look at FCP Euro's timing belt replacement video. It's exactly the same on a 2002 V70 as on the S80.

You don't actually require a puller as the crank pulley is only attached to the harmonic balancer by corrosion. A couple of taps with a rubber mallet and off she comes

Precopster, you're correct, you don't remove the crankshaft pulley itself, but you do remove the harmonic balancer, and unless you enjoy a deep sense of frustration, I would recommend taking off the serpentine belt pulley which is what our friend is asking about.

The serpentine belt pulley IS the harmonic balancer. They are cast as one unit.

Once the four screws are removed the pulley which takes the timing belt separates from the pulley which takes the accessory belt. Hope this makes sense.

It depends if you're talking about a six or five cylinder car.

On the six, the balancer is a separate piece. On the five, it's one assembly.
