2001 S60 T5- Engine Serial Number Confusion

Post by Greg Sands »

Hello everyone!

Well, my car's head gasket is gone, (oil is in coolant, already replaced oil cooler + radiator to no avail )
Was on FCP ordering the kit when i noticed something strange.

(From FCP's website)
Engine base: 2.3L L5, Sub model: T5
To Engine Serial Number 1817652

I cant find the serial number on my engine, the only numbers i found were on the timing belt cover and engine which showed show this....

(Timing Belt *Horribly faded)
B5244T3
1282367
2438443

(On engine)
B5244...
2438...

I couldn't see the rest on the engine, but it matched the cover mostly.
I'm not the brightest person in the world...but isnt it supposed to be B5234T3 NOT B5244T3???

I don't know if i should be happy or pissed.
is this a downgrade or upgrade? lol
I hope i'm mistaken, thanks for any help!

Again my vehicle is a 2001 Volvo S60 T5.

Probably not your car's first engine. :o

You COULD contact Volvo and find out that a B5234T was first fitted (and get the original engine number) but the point would be moot.

So you have a few less ponies......no big one. Officially it has 195hp when fitted to an XC or 2.4T but it may have a little more boost due to the T5 ECU.

You can also do a search for Volvo VIN decoders and see what the VIN tells you.
Here is one for example:
en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Numbers_(VIN_codes)/Volvo/VIN_Codes

You may have to cut and paste the link in its entirety.

The Engine code in the vin number shows B5234T3.
Well then, i still have a blown head gasket that needs fixing..
What car had the B5244T3 engine? so i know which parts to buy.
Also wouldn't the car...need to know its running a different engine, is it safe?
Is there any way to visually discern if the turbo is the stock one for the T5?
I'm just suspicious as to what was done to it lol.
Thanks for all the help everyone!

Any car (S60 or V70) from 2001 or 2002 with a 2.4T or XC70 badge will have a B5244T3. As far as I know the only change was the thermostat housing design in 2002.

There were non turbo versions which use a B5244S engine with higher compression pistons which will share the head gasket set.

The 2002 had a different (non separated) thermostat which looks like the pic attached or the fitters of your engine swapped the 2001 thermostat and housing to the 2002 engine (same gasket and mating surface). If yours is correct the thermostat housing will have a long lead from the temperature sensor instead of the stumpy temp sensor design pictured.

It all depends on the engine number you have. Perhaps a Volvo dealer can match your engine number to the exact car it came from. Volvo Vida (or Vadis) software alone can't do this.

You should probably adjust the wastegate to give the ideal boost pressure at idle. Take a look at IPD Volvo's video for the S60/V70 B5244T3 engine's ideal boost figure. Because of higher compression pistons you may have overboost. If it was professionally done they SHOULD have adjusted the wastegate.

Hello Everyone !
I have spoken to FCP and have order the correct parts, and also have bought the special volvo tools to complete the job but i have a few questions.
Do i really have to remove the starter and lock it with the special tool?
I have the tool but if i don't have to remove something, i wont.
Also the bar code on my turbo says TD04HL-13T.
Which is the low pressure turbo correct?
My thermostat housing looks different than the one pictured.
Bastard previous owner replaced the 2.3L with a 2.4L and didn't even leave me with the bigger turbo :/
Ah well, its only going to cost me a couple hundred dollars lol. My wallet is depressed.
