2007 S80 D5, No engine power. Smokey exhoust

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2007 S80 D5, No engine power. Smokey exhoust

Post by Draax »

Hello,
I have a friend i'm trying to help out but first of all id like to apologize for my English due to its not my native language.

He has a Volvo S80 D5 summum 2007, he had a major breakdown where the piston(?) broke down and spun around the engine block and cracked it badly.
So he managed to locate a new engine block and changed it with a new generator witch also got destroyed and of course new a new gaskets pack for the engine.

Now to the actual problem, the engine starts and runes great. But there are no power what so ever. If you stomp the pedal it will take about 3-4 seconds to hit 3000 rpm. (with no gear)
So we thought it might be that the turbo didn't spin, but it does work as far as we know.
We think we can hear a small exhaust leak between the turbo and exhaust pipe i don't know if this could be the problem or not?
You can smell rather fast that the exhaust is bad and its changing color from white and some blue smoke.
I have a diagnostic tool so i could read and clear error codes as well see how the engine are working, the turbo are loading to not more then 2-3 PSI i have no clue if that's normal or not.
The error codes i recived from the ECU: P0047 and P0403

I am aware what the codes stand for but i have no idea why they are there, my main idea is that the exhaust system are clogged, the exhaust leak are messing with the sensors or the turbo isn't working.

I want to thank you a lot in advance for any help or pointing us in the right direction towards the problem.
~~ Johan

The turbo should make more than 3 psi (probably between 8 and 18 for sure). But I wouldn't get hung up on that at the moment because it seems like that is caused by a very poor running engine. What does the exhaust smell like? Did you change the spark plugs? Pull a spark plug out.. What does it look like?

Hi spanser, thanks for your answer!
There are no spark plugs due to its a diesel, i did however check the fuel injectors and they are looking just fine.
I cant really explain the smell of the exhaust but you can tell fast that the fuel/air mixture are wrong because its such a heavy/strong smell.

Ahh that's what D5 means.. Here in the US you can't get these cars with a diesel. I would check timing and compression in that case then. Also it may help to try to bleed the fuel lines between the pump and injectors. Get all the air you can out and I would let it idle for a while after you start it. Make sure you don't have water in the fuel or old fuel.

Hello spencer,
It seems that we found a blown fuse nr 38 if i remember correctly, that one gives power to the electric turbo throttle (might be the wrong word for it) and the EGR.
We removed all the connections to the EGR and the throttle and the new fuse didn't blow.
Then we connected the EGR again and the fuse blowed instantly, we then removed the plastic cover where the socket are excluding the small 12v electric motor and the fuse blown again.
So by buying a new plastic cover with connection and the small sensor i think it will solve the problem.
Ill report back when i know more!

Thanks a lot for the problem i hope it wasn't too much trouble for you :)

I don't mean to second-guess you guys but did you get all the timing marks correctly when you put the engine back together (the electronic timing compensation can only do so much, and on a diesel you may not get a code). Other than that fuse, I would check my timing just in case :D
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Hi there, all help we could get is worth its weight in gold :)

Ill will forward this to my friend and let him check the timing.
The spare part did just arrive and it works just fine, engine is strong and healthy again :)
After i cleared the codes they are not appearing again, i just wanna inform you that my issue is resolved!

Thanks a lot! - Johan

Thats good to hear! I wouldn't worry about check the timing if it is running good - obviously it wouldn't hurt anything to check, but if the problem was resolved by a defective part the timing is probably fine.
