Replace turbo housing (straight->angled)

Post by cjep »

Hi,

I am going to replace my turbo housing from a straight to an angled flange. Anyone got any tips for this?

I guess I need to remove the entire turbo and split it out of the car?

What gaskets will I need? As I am in Australia, parts are hard to get (i.e. must be ordered online, which takes plenty of time).

Thanks in advance!

I think you will need to remove the turbo, or at least loosen the bolts on the exhaust manifold to get enough wiggle room to take the flange off. You might be able to do it with the oil and coolant lines still hooked up which saves a ton of grief. I assume that the downpipe will already be removed and out of your way.

There is a metal gasket between the exhaust manifold and the turbo. If you wind up taking off the banjo bolts for the oil and coolant lines I always replace the copper crush washers (2 per banjo bolt) and certainly the O ring and gasket for the oil return line - the latter are a high failure rate item anyway.

Just curious - does this help spool the thing sooner/reduce lag?

Thanks Lee, I have bought the o-ring, washers and gasket. I had another look and will pull it all out. Last think I want is to do all the work and then find out that some movement of the pipes starts a leak somewhere.

jblackburn - The angled flange is significantly larger in diameter, but I am not doing this for any performance increases. The OBX straight flanged downpipe does not fit my car - It is a right hand drive and hits the steering rack - so I am forced to go 'angled'.
