A/C Clutch 85 760 GLE

This morning I was greeted by a loud screaming as I started to drive away. It stopped when I took off the belt driving the A/C. The pulley freewheels when the engine is off, and is locked up tight when the A/C is turned on, so the clutch is bad. Can I replace just the clutch, is it much of a job? Is this a recommended fix? I'm reluctant to go down for a whole compressor with the labor and cost involved, as the exhaust manifold gasket leaks and the old girl may be ready for a soft landing.

Apparently it is possible to replace the compressor clutch but I have not done it, so don't know how hard it would be. I do know that a "compressor puller" (Volvo special tool) is recommended for the job.

FCP Groton do list a clutch for your car.
