2010 XC60 Turbo Sounds

Post by quirozson »

Hello VOLVO Experts!

I just bought a "New (to me)" 2010 xc60. I've noticed a few sounds I'd like to run by everyone to see if they need to be addressed.

1- Fast acceleration faint turbo high pitched build up and release of pressure noise. Only under high rpm acceleration. The sound of a turbo pressure spooling up and releasing.

2- Infrequent (1/10 drives) I can hear the turbo or transmission (I think its the turbo) at low speed coasting (maybe also at low speed driving- very low rpm- 0-20 mph.) It sounds like the blades of a fan slowly spinning and touching metal to metal. Relatively faint but loud enough for me to notice it is not "normal." Seems to go away when I give it some gas. Almost as if oil is not reaching the turbo until I give the throttle a bit of a punch.

Thanks in advance for any diagnosis/suggestions.

1. normal
2. problem

How is the oil? Have you/previous owner been following recommended practices? Either way, what have you/previous owner been doing (oil: frequency changes, type, filter, oil condition on changes)?

Miles? Still under warranty?

According to Carfax (as reported from dealership) scheduled maintenance completed at:
7,601-
14,228-
20,573-
27,957-
34,659-
42,146

Currently has 49,000 miles

All recommended maintenance seems to have been completed and registered to carfax through the dealership it was originally bought from (and the one I bought it from).

It is still under the Safe & Secure program until August of this year.

Thanks!

It also seems to be less frequent now than when I first took it from the dealer. I think it may have been on the dealer lot for a while as the battery was dead. (not sure if the sitting time might mean the engine parts are getting reconditioned now that I am driving it more often).

Just to make sure we're on the same page, a video recording of the #2 sound would help a great deal. Wherever you can hear the sound from best. If it's hard to reproduce, here's what I'd do: tape the phone to the dash. Hit record, and leave it recording until the sound happens. Then post that video file somewhere and I can edit it down, or if you have a YouTube account, post the video to YT.

Let the dealer know about the sound, so it's on record there, at the very least. I'd have them look at it. If you have a video of the sound to show them, all the better to pursue your case.

"Metal to metal" is never a good thing when talking about engines and turbochargers, that's why I'd go to these lengths.

Here is a video of the sound...

The sound stops at second 21 at the same time I turned off the climate control fan. (Coincidence? Don't remember the weather so I don't know if the ac was on.) This was taken a week ago and I haven't heard it since.

Thanks,

Chris

Do more testing of CC fan. If the noise is 1:1 with fan operation, or close to it, it's certainly not a Very Bad Problem. Meaning it's probably the blower motor bearing.

My concern is that is connected to engine RPM. Would blower be connected to RPM?

Not at all. I couldn't hear a connection to engine RPM, but I'm saying the audio wasn't good enough, not that there was no relationship.

So, today it happened again and again it went away when I turned the CC Fan off. However, it also seems to go away when I rev the engine. It doesn't seem to speed up when I rev the engine, but it does seem to get louder and then go away. Is there a part of the climate control system connected to the powertrain?

To me that sounds like the transmission. I would inspect the fluid level and color (it quite about time to replace the fluid anyway at 50k miles even if it's not specified on the maintenance schedule).
