Thank you for posting this awesome tutorial. I was already to go to the junkyard to pick up another wiper transmission because I thought my drivers side splines were stripped. I went down and took a pick tool to them, good as new

Hi MadeInJapan, first off, thank you for being the only one on the internet who has written about this issue. Like you said, the wiper arm issue is what comes up on every other search.

I've been chasing an electrical issue, if the washer pump and wiper motor are plugged in, the fuse blows. If the washer pump is unplugged, the wiper motor works but will not shut off. Is it possible the motor is bad? Thanks so much!

Thanks again for this writeup. Turns out my electrical issues were from pinched wires in the steering column part of the wiring harness. They had pinched together and then melted causing arching. Had a mechanic solder splice in new wire pieces and insulated them. The steering adjustment seemed to cause it. It was a mess, smoke coming from the steering wheel is not good.

Update..

I just did this repair as I did it wrong before. This time I followed madeinjapan's extremely helpful instructions and got them working correctly.

In addition I disassembled the linkage itself, cleaned and greased it. My wipers had always been slow even on high so this made a major difference.

- First I pried the small clips at the base of the teeth that hold the wiper arm on. It's tricky but I used the tip of a 4mm wrench and a small flathead screwdriver. Try to avoid having it fly off.

- There is a rubber O ring and some razor thin washers on both sides of the shaft, don't lose those, it would be a good idea to write down the where they go. (Had to figure it out.)

- Once the rods are removed from the housing I PB blasted the crud out of both the inner housing and the rods. Lots of corrosion. I ran some rolled up fine sandpaper through as well. Then another round of PB blaster.

- I added grease to the inner housing, reassembled the linkage, cleaned up any excessive grease and then put the 'C' clips back.

Note: the clips can be a pain to get back on, it helped to have a flathead screwdriver that has ridges at the tip. Starting them at a 15 degree angle made it work.

Hope this helps somebody, I can't thank the people on this site enough.

My 1996 850's wipers have been slow for a while. Can I use the wiper mechanism from a 1999 V70 or are they different? I'm a bit pushed for time at the moment and I have a dead V70 for spares.
