1995 Volvo 850 Horn AND odometer don't work. Related?

My daughter bought a 1995 Volvo 850 (nonturbo) last fall.

The horn never worked -- and, alas (we learned) neither does the odometer.

Is it possible that these are related? Any suggestions to remedy?

I pulled the airbag and cleaned the horn contacts...#34 fuse is fine.

Odometer doesn't work is probably due to a broken gear.

Horn never worked could be wiring or horn themselves.

Check to see if the horns are plugged in. A very common problem on the 850s is for the plastic insulators on the horn "button" on the steering wheel to break. When that happens the horns can often stay on all the time so people just unplug the horns altogether. The odometer gears, as was pointed out, are also a problem area and they too have a nearly 100% failure rate.

The good news is that it is one stop shopping to fix both problems. Odometergears.com sells both replacement gears for the odometer and a repair kit for the horn switch.

Horn and odometer gear are guaranteed to fail eventually in every 850. Both are easy repairs.
