changing oil

Post by chriskose »

I was thinking of changing my oil this weekend ('96 850R) and had a couple of questions: Where is the oil filter? and how many quarts does it take? I'm thinking six... I don't have an owners manual and I'm at school right now, so don't give me a hard time about not knowing my car.
Also, what kind of oil do you recommend? Location: Tucson, AZ temp 110 F in summer, 40 F in winter.

Filter is next to oil pan, easily accessible, and LEVEL (unlike my girlfriend's Honda). I've never had one problem changing this.

Buy 6 quarts of oil. It either takes 5.1 or 5.6 (if I remember correctly), depending on the model. Turbos are more, so you're probly the 5.6 amount.

For weight of oil consult the owner's manual. 10w 30 should cover you, but the manual has a very nice graphic showing the ranges of coverage for 3 or 4 weights.

I use Mobile 1, 10w 30. Are you on synthetic now?

I'm pretty sure it's got synthetic in there now. Just bought it last month so this will be the first oil change. Would you recommend synthetic over the other stuff. How about Fram filters or do you go for OEM?

Mann oil filters; avail. at IPD or other online places. They're the OEM manufacturer.

I recommend synth, but once you go synth, stay there. It's not good to change back and forth.

Oh, crush washer -- about $0.50. And be careful not to overtorque the drain plug -- the pan is aluminum and will strip.

I use a magnetic drain plug -- about $8.00 if I remember correctly -- but I've never seen any metal filings on it.
