If I unscrew and change the oil filter without draining the oil, how much of a mess will it make?
I find myself in this predicament because I changed the oil on my "new" XC60 but when I went to change the oil filter it took a 36mm socket which I did not have. I just left the filter in place and added the new oil. It will probably be ok running with the old filter for one OCI, but still - I would like to change it since I have no idea how long that filter has been in there.

It comes out with no more mess with the sump full of oil. It's above the sump not beneath it so it won't be affected by the level of oil in the sump.

It seems from this topic it won't be messy, just make sure to remove it with the engine cold overnight
