1998 V70R Strange noise on startup.
Hi Everybody ! from UK. I have a '98 V70R , which I don't use at the moment. It's stored outside and I turn it over every week or so. However, a nasty noise has appeared when I turn the ignition on (before actually turning the engine over). It is a quite loud/harsh/'rotary' noise that seems to come from behind and below the drivers side headlight (rhd). Any ideas ? Car starts ok and I assume that when running the noise is drowned out. Thank you. (Great site by the way !) I also have '96 850 estate...

have you checked under the hood to see if something foreign could be scraping against a belt or a pulley wheel?
is the car an automatic or manual transmission? I can imagine unhappy "rotary" noises from the other side of the car if the car is a manual (something funny with the flywheel, clutch, or associated mechanisms), but i don't think it would come from the right side.

I have a clicking noise (like valve tap) intermitent. It would start the stop but had the same interval. It was the evap purge valve cycling. Very noisy, just placed with cheap denso?
Hi thanks for reply, the noise starts when the key is turned but before engine is turning over ... Its an auto by the way.j-dawg wrote:have you checked under the hood to see if something foreign could be scraping against a belt or a pulley wheel?

Behind the drivers side headlight? There's an emissions air pump (should start after the engine starts) and a cruise control vacuum pump.
I'd remove the battery tray, set the battery aside as much as possible, and have a listen.

Me-thinks we need to remember this is a UK car, so as stated at the start the noise in from under the RH headlight area. Can't think of anything in that area that jumps to mind. Are you sure it is under the headlight area, as all I can think that is there is the washer bottle and the pump(s).
Get someone to start the car from cold with the hood raised and see if you can more precisely identify where the noise is coming from. It could be a little further back, and then you are into the serpentine belt and anything attached to it, that may have a bearing that has dried out.
You could also video it and post the noise and it may help for the giant minds that have been so helpful to me over the years being able to help narrow it down. A picture (video) speaks......

Unplug the wiper motor. They'll make some really weird noises.

Update - the noise is coming from the rear of the headlight ! It comes on at position 1 on the ignition key, and sounds like small motor jammed on.. Is there a motor here ? Thanks and thanks to all previous repliers !Rich1 wrote:Hi Everybody ! from UK. I have a '98 V70R , which I don't use at the moment. It's stored outside and I turn it over every week or so. Yes, there is a headlight wiper motor if your car is equipped with the cold weather package.Rich1 wrote:Update - the noise is coming from the rear of the headlight !
