1998 V70r - I guess I needed plugs

Post by chexny »

Car was running fine. Every now and then at a stop light it would kinda of start to feel like it was stalling- shudder a bit I guess but always for 1-2 seconds only and return to normal idle.

I decided to change out the plugs (dang oem are expensive btw). I have no idea when they were last changed and probably should have changed them out a lot time ago. Left to right is 1-5.

I believe the wires are original. What is going on in 2 and 3? 2 had almost fresh oil on it and 3 was much more burned oil. Btw this with at 175k miles, plugs since at least 120k when I got the car and most likely well older than that if not original.

Plugs/boots #2 and #3 look like you may have leaky plug well seals and or VCG, no?
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Number three is behind the oil cap so that is where spilled oil goes first. A clogged PCV and/or a bad oil cap gasket can make it worse.

If you're really curious, OEM wires should be date coded.

+1 to what Lee says. Cylinder 2 and 3 are near the oil filler cap and also the PCV pipe from the oil catch can and the connector under the plastic spark plug cover plate on the top of the engine.

The oil filler cap seals go hard and leak, use the OE part as I've found aftermarket ones can leak almost immediately again. Check also the clamp on the pipe from the PCV tank where it fits the top of the cylinder head as the pipe can crack and weep.

Finally, if those are all good, then you probably need to do a PCV overhaul.

Copper plugs are great but you have to change them every 10k - 15k. eEuroparts sells the OEM plug year round for $3.25, that's a much better deal IMHO.

1+,

I agree about re-gap. In my experience with Bosch copper plug:

I used Bosch 7555 (FR7DC), made in Brasil, after 25K miles, the gap increased from 0.028" ---> 0.032", which is normal wear/tear. I re-gapped again, then at 50K, new plugs.

This time, I use Bosch 7955 (FR7DC+), which replaces 7555, made in Germany, $1.99/each at Autozone. I followed Ozark Lee's advice and set the gap to 0.028".

---------

On the issue of oil filler cap seal. I have a brand-new oil filler cap seal from dealer. Even so, I still see a few drops of oil leak here and there. No big deal, just a little seep.
- I already removed the beauty cover (the plastic cover that says 20-valve etc.) and stored in the garage. Technically speaking I can toss this beauty cover in the trash, but I have not done that yet!
- Having the beauty cover out is great because:
* you can clean oil seepage from the cap easily
* spark plug change is a breeze.
