1998 V70 Serpentine belt too loose

Post by 5rivers »

I have replaced my alternator with a used one, and now that I have put everything back together I have a belt that is too loose! I took everything apart again thinking maybe I missed something, but I have ended up with the same situation. The tensioner does its thing when I move it forward, but because there is too much slack in the belt, moving the tensioner does not improve the situation. I have also looked at many diagrams showing the proper placement of the belt and I end up with too much slack. Any suggestions?

Thank you! This diagram was perfect. Not sure why I followed a different one. But, thanks for the help.

I used to always route it backwards through the A/C compressor and alternator area - the same belt I took off would end up way too long. After so many times now I think I have it memorized lol

See this for a routing, pulley and belt comparison. There are at least three versions.
