1995 960 When applying brakes steering and car shakes

Post by techedbob »

When applying brakes, the steering wheel shakes and it feels like ride over small speed bumps. I have had the brakes replaced, rotors cut. the problem went away for a short time, however itis back. What else can the problem be? :?

Was the shake present before the brake job? If yes, and the rotors were turned during the brake job, maybe the rotors are warped again. The rotors and pads need to be broken in.

Definitely warped rotors. Replace existing rotors with new ones.

Warped rotors are not necessarily the cause of this problem. Issues like this are difficult to pinpoint, because they involve the entirety of the car's suspension. As an example- Your problem could be warped rotors, or it could be worn bushings in the rear of the car, or something in between. As a starting point, I'd have the tires balanced and rotated and have those rotors checked out. The tie rods are also a common culprit, check them and all the rubber bushings for wear. A good alignment shop will be able to help you with this.

+1 on a thorough check of the suspension/steering assembly. You will also want to check that the slide pins on the rotor are freely moving. I have had them seize on me in the past leading to a faulty diagnosis of warped rotors. I have also had vehicles with faulty/bad ABS systems that caused similar problems. This one is an easy diagnosis as you can just pull the fuse to check the system without ABS interruptions.

loose calipers or loose wheel hub. take the wheel off and check/tighten both. if still loose, your wheel hub is going bad and may need to be replaced soon. good luck.

ps- if not loose after you tighten everything, but still wobbles when you brake, your rotor may be warped and need resurfacing or buy new rotors $35 bucks/each online
