Small claims court unless the machine shop offers to buy you a new head after being informed of the error of their ways.

That is what I was considering. Anyone done this before? What are the damages for a head with 125K on it? Ran the cams in it (about 10 miles). So they are messed up too.

Does it leak?
Did the cams lock in the head?
Did it break cam belt and bend valves?

Bead blasting a volvo head with the two halves bolted together is not fatal. Only a problem is the sealing surfaces are messed up and it leaks or if one of the cams seizes.

They bead blasted the head apart. Cleaned up the top of the head (where the cams sit) by bead blasting. I missed it. Just a shade tree mechanic. Put it back together and had a ring problem. Pulled the head off and could see the scoring where the cams were turning on the bead blasted surface. Took the head to a different machine shop and the first thing the owner said was "that head is ruined."

I am going to try to find a new motor and put it in there and move on. Don't think I want to trust this machine shop to do anything for me, but I do think he owes me a new head and cams. I can't imagine asking him for a new head from Volvo, but I figure its got to be $500 to a $1000

I find it hard to believe a machine shop would be that dumb as to bead blast the inside surfaces of an OHC head without protecting journals. What the purpose of this procedure? What was their reason for doing this in the first place?
Something just doesn't sound right.

Hi: I would take the head back to the machine shop which damaged the head and try and negotiate a new head and cams. Try your best to stay calm and work it out. Any kind of court action sucks!!! Just figure out what is reasonable and acceptable to you before you go there. Stay calm, do not fight, negotiate a resolution. Maybe he will be able to supply you with a new head and cams and all is good. If you are in doubt of such products you can always have them inspected by another party. Good Luck with this. I agree with Pete. Stay out of court if possible -- there aren't really winners in that scenario, plus it tends to generate a lot of bad blood. I was only suggesting it if the shop did not agree to take some responsibility.

Tell them (the machine shop) about Clearwater Heads. Perhaps they will accept that head as a core and allow your machine shop to send it in.

They definitely put the apprentice on this one !!
