'97 855 t5...dead cylinder

Post by Jakoby »

Well everyone I have finally destroyed my volv.
#2 cylinder 90
All others 145-160.
Really don't wat to pull the motor but think I will have To. I put a little oil in the cylinder and got 210 so definatly a ring.
Does any one have suggests for making my life easier. I.e.things to check, parts to replace, videos to watch, sites to explore. I have done a full rebuild on a 2001 Chevy 4.3 vortec.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Love the car since the day I bought it and need to get it back in action.
Thanks all

The ring could be stuck rather than broken, e.g.

If the ring is cracked or broken than I would probably just find and swap in another engine rather than rebuild the bottom end. That's my preference, anyway. Keep the head from your old engine for when the valve stem seals go on the swap.

Hmmm let's hope that's the case.
There aren't a lot of 5 pots to find another good motor here in idaho. Which is sad

Ah yes, I feel your pain. :(

EDIT: too bad this one is 15 miles from you and 1500 from me, I have a rebuilt non-turbo engine just itching to be dropped into it!

Try Seafoam as suggested first.

I see a tranny swap coming in too. 500$ for a trans can't be to bad and a whole parts car same color as mine

And also when talking about freeing up the rings is it from the ring groove?

So I have decided to tear it apart and begin the inspection process.
So have I haven't seen anything wrong in the 4 pot or head. Compression test on that cylinder was 90 and the rest were 160-140. Did notice I had a burnt intake valve in #2 though. It appears as if the previous owner you rebuilt it didn't know what they were doing with the rebuild. Cross hatch is excellent in 1-3. While 4 and 5 the cross hatch is almost straight, starting to think that the rings are shot.
