2001 V70 Clunking when driving over bumps

Post by Saadavid »

Hi guys,

As the title says, clunking sound. I recently put on new control arms.

When i open the hood I'm able to twist the strut tower (nut) so I assume the spring seat is bad.

How do I know if the spring mount is bad?

The Spring Seat is number #7 in the diagram.

The Spring "Mount" you maybe referring to is #3 which is called a "Support plate" or "Upper Strut Mount Bearing" per IPD.

Diagram: Just the first Volvo Site that came up when Googling.

I only took apart one side of my OE strut on a 98 S70 T5 with 231K before deciding to replace both sides with the Readymount so I forgot what that part is like. Either way it should not be sloppy nor gritty as it should turn along with the Spring Seat.

Not for 2001 V70 however

Thank you.

I'd also like to mention that the nut is not centered where it comes up under the hood.

Would you replace the upper strut mount bearing?

Either the front sway bar bushings - easier to replace, or the upper strut mount bearing.

The nut not being centered is most likely from the Spring Seat embedded bushing/collar having loosened or separated from the Spring Seat. As with the Upper Strut Mount Bearing if it turned freely without feeling gritty or sloppy you can let it go. The car is at an age where you can potentially be changing quite a few suspension parts so you have to weigh the options and count your cost.

Keep in mind to do everything in pairs as with tires and or shocks and struts.

Bearing plates rarely go bad but if it's in such bad shape I would replace them
You cannot tell anything about it until it's removed.

If you have over 125K miles, replace everything
Struts
Spring seats
Bearing plates
Strut bellows
Nuts and bolts as necessary
Check your end links, (replace if necessary) check inner and outer tie rods (replace if there is movement) and you already said you did the control arms.
Did you also replace your ball joints or just the C/A bushings?
If not look at them carefully

FWIW: I recently did my suspension parts. Being a hassle to get parts cheaply here in Canada I ordered everything from FCP, which included the bearings, although I was unsure if I needed them.

I was glad to have replaced them. The old ones were definitely 'serviceable', but had loads of rust all over, and one was feeling a little gritty. If they failed in a few years I'd have to redo everything almost (removing struts etc), and considering they are 12+ years old now it's nice knowing it's once less thing to worry about.
