Sounds like the connector is dirty or bad or the wiring from the MAF.

I saw one of the fixes for looseness (put a strap around it), i have the one mounted on the air cleaner housing. The question is, (and this is part of my theory) if the fuel relay is bad, and the MAF works, would the confusion simply not allow the gas control to operate right? And, by unplugging the MAF, it allows the engine to bypass that control and allow gas to flow into the engine, albeit uncontrolled? I seem to guzzle more gas than a normal 850 (what's a normal 850? ). BTW did the mod on the air flap. Just like everyone else, mine froze. Happy Birthday to me!!!!!!! :D

Opps, forgot to ask, is there any other fixes for your suggestion?

Read your codes- There isn't enough information to really know what to do.

Back to the 93 volvo 850 glt stalling. Car stalled earlier this week twice while driving. No check engine light. I finally discovered how to read the codes.
Codes were 113 and 121.
113 is short term fuel mixture too weak
121 MAF sensor signal absent

I'm going to ask the mechanic to clean the contacts on the MAF sensore for now as some people suggested here. Would the maf sensor also cause the 113 code or would be another cause for the weak fuel mixture ?
Why did the check engine light not come on even though there were codes present ?
I am hoping the mAF sensor is the culprit and that it will put an end to the stalling. I bough a volvo for my 16 year old for safety but the intermittant cutting out while driving defeats that purpose.

Does anyone have any ideas what may cause code 113 ?

MAF's do strange things....they affect all kinds of fuel/air mixture data including turbo codes. I had a slew of them, but after replacing the MAF and resetting the codes they all went away. Good luck with cleaning it (could work) but...I had to replace mine before my issues were solved.

Btw, about the cheapest I've seen on a new MAF sensor:

Check this guy's store out for other Volvo parts...pretty decent prices and selection!

Okay. Gonna try cleaning, but I'm guessing you're right about replacing. Somewhere on the threads was a method of cleaning the throttle. Could you link me back to it, or is that not advisable to do, given the circumstance? I figure it couldn't hurt. Btw, like i said, my car drives fine with the MAF unplugged. Still having a fun time with cold starting like that, that's why i asked if I should go ahead and replace the relay. It looks okay, but looks are deceiving, after all. Anyone having this no starting problem on 850s' should try unplugging their MAF to see if that can help. Definitly NOT a long term fix, but in an emergency it worked to get the car moving on it's own, no tow truck. The little old lady that I bought mine from had hers @ a shop, and they would just dead roll the car out of the shop and tell her that it would cost $600 to fix. Thanks :)

Cleaning the throttle body is very easy....you can buy a throttle body cleaner or one that is made for the Intercooler system. Try to avoid harsh ones that would degrade the rubber hoses to it like carb cleaners. Anyway, you just take the rubber hose to the throttle off and begin spraying and cleaning. Be careful for the IAC sensor (the one that the strange hose with an exter appendage attaches to. I have heard that these can get messed up with solvents...might be good to cover it with a plastic bag as you do this. Use a tooth brush and scrub the throttle opening as good as you can. There is a butter-fly valve (I suppose there is a better name) on the throttle body that allows the adjustment of air into your intake- get it really well, especially if there is gunk built up that doesn't allow it to close all the way. Let everything dry and then put the hose back on. Cleaning it may or may not have an affect on how your car runs, but it can't hurt- get the inside of the IC hose to it as well.

In regards to your MAF sensor, if you unplug it and the car drives better, it's definitely your problem. It's either the sensor itself or the connector on it. Either way, you could try cleaning it but if that doesn't work, you'll need to replace it. I'm sure your car is in a "limp-home" mode with it unplugged. You will never get full boost as your ECU will give a signal for your car to run at a conservatively safe level. Do not drive your car like this for a long time- fuel/air mixture will be off and cannot be very good for your engine in the long run. So, like you said, "in an emergency," to get you to someplace for the repair, I would say is fine.

I would help you more, but last night through my stupidity, I messed it up my computer royally, so I don't have access to my home computer where all my Volvo data WAS anymore...I'm trying to recover. I was testing a recovery CD for another computer on my home computer. When I have done this in the past, all I want to see is if the copy I made boots up- it gives me the message that the CD is for the wrong computer and then I take the CD out and reboot my computer. However, last night, the CD booted up and began partitioning my HDD. I tried to stop it, but it was too late. Now I have no partition, cannot recover my Hard drive and I'm even getting errors on it when I try to format and reinstall an operating system. I have lost EVERYTHING. Also, I will probably have to go to Circuit City or somewhere today and buy a replacement hard drive so I can start over.
Gee- I'm very flustered right now- sorry for my ramblings.
