2000 v70 turn signals work but don't flash -- solid light

Post by piesia »

Hi,

I have a 2000 V70 wagon (base model) and lately I remember noticing that if I left the left turn signal stalk down (it seems to not turn off automatically anymore for a left turn but will still for a right), then even with the engine off and key out of the ignition. the left turn signal light will be lit (and not flashing). I thought that the right turn signal was flashing OK and the problem was only with the left but this week (no money and I've been busy :-( ) I noticed that the right turn signal is going on solid (no flash), too.

I noticed only after the turn signal issue started, but might be related, that my hazard switch stopped turning the hazards on and off -- the switch is underneath the radio on the dash in this model.

it's hard to tell on a bright day outside but I think that all of the turn signal lights (side marker, front and back on both the left and right sides) are actually lit, but they are not blinking.

to summarize, I am having 3 possibly related issues:

1) turn signal lights are solid if you turn them on with no flash
2) turn signal light is still lit with key out of the ignition if the stalk on the steering column is in the turn signal on position
3) the hazard lights don't turn on and off at the switch

the fourth issue (the turn signal not returning to neutral after a turn from a left turn) is not as big an issue unless it's causing the other issues! ;-)
is this a bad relay/flasher somewhere, maybe or is the turn signal switch gone bad? this is the base model v70, year 2000.

thanks for any suggestions!

I don't have too much money for repairs but my daughter drives the car so I'll fix it, I promise!

best regards,

Piesia

Turn signal is part of the hazard circuit.

So get new hazard switch on ebay ($10-$15). Make sure you buy a unit with intact plastic tab, otherwise, you will have to creatively use some zip ties and tie it to the some areas behind the radio (this is what I do for mine) so it does not fall off.

thank you, cn90! do I need to remove the radio or dash pieces to get the hazard switch out or can I gently pry it out from the front with enough clearance to slip whatever tab holds it on off to replace it? I'll watch out for the tab on the new hazard switch as you recommend.

thanks again!

Push the 2 side tabs on the radio, slide it out (if you d/c the radio, then make sure you have the radio code).

Then push the hazard switch out.

Tons of used hazard switch on ebay...

On each side, there is a plastic tab that helps hold the metal spring in place.
In many of these used switches on ebay, the tabs are broken, so look at them carefully before buying it.
Even if it is broken, you can still zip tie it.
See photo below for the tabs...

On the other hand, a brand-new unit is only $50 from dealer, which is not a bad price for a new unit:

ok, thank you! after playing with the hazard button a few times, now everything works again -- hazards and turn signals, and tun signals DON'T light up if the key is not in the ignition if switched on).

I expect this part might be failing again soon so thanks for the information and the picture

Hi, Stephan,

thanks very much for offering to pull one, but no thank you!

I think I'll wait for now to see if it happens again, so far it seems to have fixed itself :)

best regards,

Piesia - Did this correct itself for good - did you ever replace the hazard switch?

I started having the same issue this weekend. Right/Left turn signal both remain solid when engaged. The turn signal stick does return after I turn the wheel. However the hazard light does not turn on -- both on the dashboard and the marker lights do not turn on. All the lights work and respond to the up/down movement of the turnsignal stick.
