Short form: Can I drive our '04 V70 safely with the ABS fuses removed ?
Long Form: The ABS on our 2004 V70 has been acting up for a while. The problems seemed to start when I damaged the driver's side wheel sensor while changing the struts. The ABS light comes on intermittently and randomly. When the light is off the ABS works fine. Usually. Sometimes the car won't shift and the speedo stays at 20 mph. At some point the ABS light comes on and everything returns to normal, including the ABS not working. Randomly, while on dry pavement the car will respond like it is on ice, the ABS is overactive and the car will barely stop. Needless to say, Mary is less than excited about this latest development. The problem seems to be becoming worse, but it does not seem to be temperature sensitive.
In the interest of troubleshooting the problem I am considering removing the ABS fuses and see if the shifting and speedometer problems remain or change. To my way of thinking, a car without ABS is safer than a car that randomly won't stop on a dry road.
What do you think ?
Thanks
Greg
2004 V70 Removing ABS fuses
Yesterday I was going to check the hubs and clean off the sensors when I found the left front wheel sensor was loose. Apparently when I replaced it last winter a drop of mud fell into the bolt hole and prevented the bolt from tightening completely. I'll have to see if the car behaves for a few weeks before deciding the problem is fixed.
