2001 Volvo S80 AC Clutch

Post by maxhchurch »

My AC blows cold air for about 5 minutes then turns warm. I suspect that the AC Clutch is warn out. Is that the most likely reason? And, how difficult is it to replace?

Does it cycle back to cold air after some time? Mine would run for 15 minutes cool, 15 hot, then back to cool. (Time varies with outside temp.)

Very easy to replace - write a big check to mechanic. Cost about $1100 for a new compressor, since they no longer sell the clutches. Some do the shim fix, my mechanic says he has done that but finds it does not last.

Same thing happened to me. The bread clip fix doesn't last because they're plastic shims, so don't do that. I fixed mine with metal e-clips. Here's the thread, good luck!

I have a 2002 S80, the clutch gap is worn so much the dealer said he could not reshim it. They want about $1200 to replace the whole compressor. I found this clutch assy on e-bay:

One mechanic said he had to remove the compressor to replace the clutch, that would involve evac and recharge. It looks like there is enough clearance to get it off without removing the compressor. Has anyone replaced the clutch on the car without removing the compressor?
