I've got a spare one of these at home. I'll have a look at it and see if I can get you any further with it

Thank you- that would help. I'm out of town for a week and yet to do the replacement but I have re-spliced all wires back together the best I could, hoping I have not made a mistake

Ok, if you have a multimeter you should be able to figure this out by checking the conductivity between the wires at the plugs. Judging by your photo I think that the cut wires are on the left hand side light?
With the plugs having the two black wires at the top left and the two purple wires at the bottom right I'll refer to the wire positions (as looking at the side of the plug the wires go into) as L1 - L8 for left light and R1 - R8 for right hand light - Positions 1-5 at the top from left to right, and positions 6 - 8 at the bottom, again left to right.

Ok with that out of the way you should be able figure this out.
Black from L1 has conductivity to R1, R2, R7 and R8
Black from L2 has no conductivity to any wire on the other plug
Purple from L7 has conductivity to R1, R2, R7 and R8
Purple from L8 has no conductivity to any other wire on the other plug.

Let me know if thats not clear enough and I'll draw it out of something
