1998 V70T5 A little stalling

Post by obayha »

First I want to thank MVS for getting me home yesterday. Problem started Saturday with the car stalling 3 time doing some running around town. Had a code read and showed the MAF might be at fault. Didn't need to use it again until yesterday (Wednesday). Ran fine for my 50 mile trip to work. On way home, 1 mile from office, just got on interstate and it stopped. Was able to pull to side and think. Well MVS says to unplug the MAF and see what happens. Pulled it and it started and 49 miles later I was home. Cleaned the MAF and it didn't help, so O'reiley"s had one in stock, installed it and she started great. Sounds like a happy ending....
This morning after 3 miles of town driving and 44 miles of interstate, I slowed on the ramp and she dies..
It started right back up and finished drive to work..
What next to check?
Thanks for any help.
The only funny part is I do have a lifetime warranty on the MAF from O'Reiley's, on a car with 316,000 miles.

Shane - fuel pump relays are a common source of intermittent stalling on these cars. I know the MAF code is pointing you to that, but once the car starts running poorly, Ive often found you get spurious codes.

You were due for a new MAF anyhow...

Thanks for the input. It only stalled that one time this morning on the way, getting off the interstate. Had to do a little running around Charlotte and then the drive home, stop and go, on the interstate with no problems. If any more problems I will look in the fuel pump relay direction.
This volvo has been great with very few problems with the miles it has on it, so I expect a thing or two to start happening.
It's just odd when it does.
Thanks again

Wow, 314,000 miles! That is 511,000 km. Is the engine and transmission original?
I thought a fuel pump either works or doesn't? They die an early death if you run the tank low on gas often.

Do you have any codes? Is the fuel pressure strong?

Yes mecheng, I am pretty sure everything is original, as the original owner was my sister-in-law. Abscate was saying something about the fuel pump relays. I would think if it is electrical, they can start to fail and come back and forth to life for a while. I do run low on fuel all the time. After replacing the MAF, it has only shut off once. Being off work for the next three days, it will not be driven much. This will give me some time to read more on the relays and anything else someone throws my way.

Pretty impressive to be sure. But not unheard of. My indie mechanic has a 98 XC just like me and he has 300k on his, with the original engine and trans.

It's all in the maintenance on these cars.

That is pretty good, glad to hear. I know the old Volvos 740, 240 last a long time, I wasn't sure about the Turbo 2.3L or 2.4L.

Ahh yes I almost forgot, definetly open the fuel pump relay and check for solder cracks. My relay had cracks for the relay coil which I resoldered. You could only see the cracks with a magnifying glass but they would likely grow with time, vibration, heat.
