Front end whirling 2000 S80 2.9

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Front end whirling 2000 S80 2.9

Post by hotrodlincoln »

Hi- Just purchased 2000 S80 with 72k miles. Had front suspension work done including upper shock towers, lower bushings etc. and put on new tires. What I've noticed as I drive down the road is a whirling sound that increases with speed and hums as I slow down. I can't figure out if it is the new tires(did not go with Michelins) or the cv joints or something else. Could tires be this loud? Anyway, Just looking for some ideas on what this could be. Thanks for the help!

Even though both Matt and I agree that it's probably a wheel bearing, make sure that it is. In other words, with front end suspension work and new tires, they might have bound something up which is causing the noise. Just check that out to make sure that's not it. With that said, your symptoms certainly sound exactly what a bad wheel bearing would sound like.

They charged me 400 labor and 420 parts. I found it alot cheaper via parts stores just wanted it done. Do these s80 always have a hum going on? It seems my transmission kinda of hums when it gets to the overdrve or is that going too? I not so impressed with the newer volvo's
