1998 V70 GLT Turbo Wastegate Solenoid A Malfunction?

Post by Seaway »

Drove my car all day running errands and working etc with no problems. Tried to start it later and it was hard to start, stumbled and then died. It would not restart. I was able to get it to throw a code which was

Turbo Wastegate Solenoid A Malfunction

I just replaced the TCV the other day and that was my immediate thought, but everything seemed fine. Remembered reading about MAF problems and decided to try unplugging it. Car started right up. Hunts a bit at idle and smells rich though.

Should I lean toward a new MAF sensor? Coincidence that it happened after changing the TCV? Car had a K&N filter when I got it, but I changed it to a stock filter.

Thanks.

Had the same code and swap the connector with the vacuum lines attached to the airbox.

If you mean the TCV, I just replaced that and put new silicon vacuum lines on it. The vacuum line to the wastegate was actually broken. I now have a turbo that works.

I went ahead and ordered a new Bosch MAF sensor after cleaning the existing. It worked a grand total of one time before the symptoms returned and the car would not start. Unplugged it and the car starts and drives fine, just hunts a little at idle when cold and I imagine the mileage is terrible.

Over the weekend I installed new plug wires, new distributor cap and rotor, new Volvo OEM plugs and changed the oil to full synthetic (PO had the car serviced at the dealer and it was running Volvo oil - 5w-30). The car runs amazingly smooth at the moment, even with the MAF sensor unplugged. The new one will be here today and I am hopeful it solves the problem.

Once I get the MAF sorted, I am going to take a turn on the wastegate arm and see if I can get the boost to come on a little earlier as it doesn't seem to get going until about 2300-2400 rpms.

Update - got the new MAF sensor installed and the car is back to normal. Starts up and settles quickly to idle. After all the work I have just done it runs beautifully, especially considering the high miles.

Next project is figuring out why the passenger side AC blows hot no matter the temperature setting after my young son decided to play with the climate controls yesterday. I assume it's the linkage to the doors for the vents. Any diagrams around to show where that is? Dash have to come off to fix it?
