1996 T5 Auto Fault code 444 after installing new T5R ECU

Post by goofy2 »

I have a 850 T5 Wagon 1996 which had a faulty ECU unit so I thought I would up grade to the T5R unit coded 0 261 203 628 (USA Auto T5R Version). After installing the error code 444 came up and cannot be reset. Does the T5R have an acceleration sensor which is either not on or different from the original T5 version 0 261 203 852.

You should always replace with the exact same ECU. Same year and numbers.

Are you getting the code from the OBDii port, or is there a diagnostics box under the hood (there would only be ODBii on a US model 96)?

If the code is from the OBD reader then it is a simple evap code, possibly the purge valve is leaking.

It's totally fine to put a 628 ECU into a regular T5, even to switch model years (my 95 has run on a 96 ECU for years now), but you do need to watch for which of the various emissions gadgets were included in the two vehicles involved. Especially air pump and EGR, depending on the years, were installed or excluded seemingly randomly in many cases.

This. I've had a "628" ECU in my 1997 850 T5 for two years.

The DTC code was obtained from the OBDII socket in the center console.
