1996 850 T5: DTC 335 & 444 on both US M4.3 & M4.4, not on EUR M4.3?

Post by Sommerfeldt »

So, that might be a bit of a cryptic subject line... let me "deobfuscate".

I've got a '96 855 T5. With my original ECU, I don't currently have any DTCs, no CEL, nothing. Reading the modules with my home made blinkytool gives me 1-1-1 on everything.

I also have an M4.4 ECU, set up by erikv, with AC mod and all, which works beautifully, but gives me codes 335 and 444 after a few seconds running. It doesn't seem to have any effect on driveability or operation, but the CEL is always a pain to have winking at you as you're rolling along, right? I thought this was some kind of call to the TCU that wasn't being replied to/got wrong replies from the tranny, but I haven't been able to track it down.

On top of this, I have an R ECU running M4.3. This should definitely work exactly the same as my original T5 ECU, but produces the same DTCs as the M4.4. As far as I can tell, this kind of narrows things down to 2 things: Either, there's something wrong with my original ECU, making it not report the DTCs that are real, and refusing the TCUs request to set a MIL, or there's some kind of difference between the US/EUR ECUs that I can't seem to dig up.

If someone has some insight into what this could be, I'd appreciate any input... while it doesn't seem like these have any impacts on driveability, power, mpg, or anything else, having a constant CEL on does make me worry that I wouldn't spot an actual fault, if something should come up... :(

If your codes are in P format....P0335 is engine rpm sensor signal missing, permanent fault,P0444 is evaporative emission system EVAP valve, signal too high, intermittent fault.
1st one should be because the tune you have could be for different transmission or different speed sensor signal.M4.3 & 4.4 should have different rpm sensor and signal

2nd one could be also because of different emission system than your car originally have.
I wouldn't even consider that your original ecu is at fault since both of replacements are tuned.
And NO... ecus are the same for US and EU market, the only difference is in chipped key readout....obdII port is wired differently just for ecu & immo2 diagnostics...also emissions control could be different from market to market.
Keep in mind that M4.4 doesn't produce flash codes like M4.3 so the code readout is different.

Hey Misha.

They're not in P format - they're in flashy format. ;)

So A2 335, request from TCM to set MIL, and 444, which is the not so informative "Acceleration signal". My M4.4 sets these codes, which might very well be something in the tune - that's been "fiddled with", at least.

My conundrum is that a very much stock R ECU with M4.3 does the same thing. 444 seems to be looking for some kind of accelerometer, which I have no idea where to look for. I don't even know if I have one... The 335 seems to be some kind of problem with a signal lead... but if that was the case, and since the R M4.3 thinks it's an issue, shouldn't the original T5 ECU agree as well?

I would read M4.4 with Vol-fcr or some obdII code reader.M4.4 ecu don't produce flash codes like M4.3 and it is not possible to read flash codes from it in the way you read them from M4.3...neither from ports under the hood and neither from OBDII port with built flash code reader, because M4.4 is fully OBD II compliant.
My 850 Turbo code list doesn't have 4-4-4 nowhere except in abs ecu.
Are tuned ecus tuned for auto or a manual car?
I'm staying with my statement about your factory ecu.

Right... I thought this was a little obvious, but the M4.4 gives the EQUIVALENT of the 335 and 444 flash codes. The STOCK R ECU (nothing "tuned") reports 335 and 444. STOCK T5 ECU reports nothing amiss.

Your turbo code list should have both 335 and 444 under A2, Fuel system.
There is only one "tuned" ECU, that's the M4.4 with a slightly modified 607 .bin for an automatic. The other two ECUs are bone stock - one R and one T5.

I have 3-3-5,but 4-4-4 is not present in A2.
It is only in A3,which is abs & tracs ecu.

I understand what you are saying but...It seems like there is a M4.3 tune in a M4.4 ecu, since it produce flash codes,i don't know, but i do know for sure that M4.4 is not producing flash codes.
Like i said, try with vol-fcr or obdII scan tool and see what you get.
I would try Vol-fcr first.

The M4.3 ECUs have been read with my own flashy thingy. The M4.4 ECU has been read with my OBDII-reader, since that's actually possible. I'm not saying, nor have I said, that the M4.4 will produce the same flash codes as M4.3. Let's get past that.

The M4.3 ECUs are STOCK, original ECUs. Mine came with the car from factory, and the R ECU was lifted straight from an R. So the only one that's been tinkered with, is the M4.4.

The M4.4 ECU gives me P1307 or 1308, I can't remember off hand which it was - I don't have the code with me. That is a 444. In addition, it says P1617, which is 335.

Why don't you try on www.volvospeed.com
They have more experience with ecu tuning.
