for several years I have used the two bar threaded strut spring compressor until I had one of the arms slip. I saw this unit on eBay for $120.00. here are some pictures of a strut spring under compression.

The trick with the sticks is to thread a piece of chain through each arm and then through the spring.
The other trick is to make sure you tension them evenly - and realize that since you generally don't have the same amount of spring on each, equal tension is not equal length of thread on the two sticks. Tension them to keep the spring looking straight, a little bit at a time. You only do this job every 100k miles, so take your time.
Once you do this, and wear heavy gloves , you really can't get more than a bruise.
Plan B is to take your parts to your Indy and have s/he assemble for a six pack
That is a NFT though, and it so easy to use, the dogs will sleep right next to it...
