Volvo 240DL for sale. Should I buy?

Post by AVIP »

Hey guys,
So for sale near me is a Volvo 240DL 1988 with a 5 speed. Would be my first standard though I do know how to drive it lol.

My question is, is it worth the purchase? It is 1500 with 230000 on the od. I'm sure they aren't giving me a brand new clutch and tires either but the car looks nice and I'm willing to take a look at it. What should I look for especially in this model?

Paint and interior look amazing.

You could go there with a crazy long list of mechanical/electrical goods to check, but no matter what there will be repairs to do. Three things:
  • RUST. Under the car (look around the pinch weld), behind the rear bumper (open the trunk, pull up the storage compartment hatch and look), push on the floorpans from underneath, butt cheeks (behind rear wheels) etc etc. Rust will be the biggest issue to keep an eye out for.
  • Make sure the blower motor works. Replacing that is a full day's work.
  • If it rides really sloppily, you have quite a bit of work to do. Almost all of the bushings on the 240s need a press for removal/install.
When you get the car, do a complete Stage 0 - paying a dollar up front is better than being nickel/dimed to death for the next few years. Change all of the fluids. Engine oil, trans fluid (OEM only), diff fluid, brake fluid, power steering, and coolant (G05with distilled water only). Replace spark plugs (Bosch coppers), wires (Bougicord only), distributor cap/rotor (Bosch), fuel filter (Bosch), air filter, and clean/replace the PCV system. Grab an extra fuel pump relay and MAF (Bosch only) to store in the trunk. You should be good to go for a long time. Get on Brickboard and Turbobricks.
