Re: 1999 V70XC time to rebuild turbo... I think
I found a used turbo at my local pick and pull for $100. It is very tight, no play at all. I figured if I mess up the rebuild I've got a non working car but if I put in used (may not last as long) at least I can still drive with the old one. Anyway, swapped it out last weekend and no more smoke whatsoever. The shaft on the one was so sloppy you can hear and see it move as I wiggled it.

Spend the money to buy the genuine Mitsubishi rebuild kit. I think the last one I bought cost around $80.00 from an eBay seller.
Marking the shaft and the impeller is difficult but necessary unless you want to pay to get it rebalanced. The two parts need to be scribed and the nut will be getting replaced so it does no good to scribe along the left hand thread nut. I scribe the tip of the shaft and then extend that down to the impeller. It isn't a perfect way to match it but it will get you within a few degrees and it is close enough.

I'm golden now, I'll hold onto the old turbo but I won't bother with rebuilding it for awhile but I will keep in mind the advice on a Mitsubishi kit. Thanks.
