2004 S60R stalls out after repair booboo

Post by sundancekid »

I bought this car with 90K on it and have driven it 10K. Worked perfectly until I decided to replace the timing belt. when I was finishing the job, i forgot to tighten the hose clamp where the charge air pipe, coming over the top of the engine, connects to the intercooler up front. I drove about 40 miles with the car nearly dying every time I stepped on the gas. Then, the hose must have come completely off, because the engine died. It would start, but die right away. Found the problem, and reattached the pipe to the hose. Now the engine will sometimes die when starting from a stop; or when I try to accelerate, it will stumble badly, then pick up. When I am trying to merge into freeway traffic and am really romping down on the gas, it will pick up speed, but it feels like the turbo is not kicking in.
Is it possible I destroyed the turbo by running with the hose loose for 40 miles? How can I diagnose whether it's the turbo, or something related? (I used an OBD diagnostic tool, and is shows no trouble codes.) and, if it is the turbo, will I hurt anything by continuing to operate for a while--I have to take a 3000 mile trip in three days, and was really looking forward to my first road trip with this beauty! Thanks! Ernie

The turbo would not be damaged by running without the hose for a few hours. I would check the timing belt remembering to pass the marks by 90 degrees on the cam and then turning back to the marks ( lots of write ups here on MVS. Check the hose connections tot he turbo as well

Thanks for the reply! I did some reading on turbo replacement--not a happy occurrence! You've put my mind at ease.

I would also check if the needle on the tensioner it's still in the middle with the engine cold.

It's probably the plastic hose going over the engine and connecting at the turbo near the exhaust manifold. Check that one as well.

Timing belt will give you codes if off by a tooth or more.
