It sounded like a belt slighly squealing on & off for a couple days. Today it rapidly progressed to a loud squeal with a smell of rubber burning while my daughter was driving so she pulled over and shut off the engine. Upon investigation, it appears the Crankshaft Harmonic Balancer is severely wobbling so I towed it home rather than further risk engine damage.
Can anyone tell me how to replace the Crankshaft Harmonic Balancer? What holds it on the crankshaft? Do I need to remove the timing belt for the job or just the serpentine belt?

Theoretically you can remove just the balancer without removing the timing belt but it does have an element of risk. The balancer is held in place with four bolts that secure it to the timing belt sprocket portion of the balancer and then one large center nut. If you remove the large nut and the four bolts the balancer should come off but there is a chance that the crankshaft sprocket will come with it.
At a very minimum set the engine to the timing marks and then remove the serpentine belt before you start.

This harmonic balancer (aka Crank Pulley) is a critical part of the car. Use Volvo only.
PN is 1275801, but it is expensive at $280.
Another option is a used crank pulley (with low mileage) on ebay.
Or junk yard.
The INNER part (where it is bolted to the crank) is bonded to the OUTER part (where the belts are routed through) by rubberized material. With time/aging etc, the rubberized material deteriorates and the 2 halves separate.
I just did the timing belt on a friend 2005 Toyota Sienna. Here are some tricks if you don't have the special tool that holds the Crank Pulley.
- Starter Bump trick (1/2 breaker bar next to control arm). Crank the starter for only 1-2 sec, then STOP! Search youtube for that trick.
This will undo the big bolt.
- Use impact gun to undo the rest.
- During installation, use impact tool to tighten the bolt to spec.
PS: If you have not done the timing belt yet, time to do it together to save time/labor.
