A few minor additions to those changing auto-dim to manual dim. I just bought a manual dim on eBay for $25 with shipping, so they are coming down in price.
Second, I used an IPD bone tool http://www.ipdusa.com/products/4801/110 ... -bone-tool to split the mirror case, it leaves fewer marks around the mirror than the screwdriver and causes less damage. Start at the top of the mirror by the seat-belt light, push down with the bone tool until the clip releases, but keep the bone tool in the groove between the case halves and move to the next clip, push down until it releases, and work your way around until the cover comes off.
Then I used the bone tool to remove the circuit board from the mirror along with some paint stirring sticks. Use the bone tool at one end of the board to get the board up off of the double-back tape just enough to slip the bone tool in by a half inch (1 cm) Then twist the bone tool to raise the board off of the sticky tape. Insert the stick to hold the board up, then move the bone tool to where the board is still stuck to the tape. Repeat, working down the board, until the board comes off. I didn't even need to use any heat.
Also, one thing I did to reduce static damage was to use my wrist ground strap and attach it to the ground of the good wiring board during disassembly/reassembly. I was lucky enough to get a piece of the wire harness along with the replacement mirror that had the connector and about 20 wires. Find the brown wire, strip it, and attach your wrist strap to that wire, plug the connector into the circuit board, and you are then grounded to the wiring board main ground plane.
I had some 3M spray adhesive form another project and used that to bolster the old sticky glue.
The manual mirror mini-printed wiring board for the seat belt LEDs does not have the rear-facing light sensor for the auto-dim circuit; also the manual mirror case does not have the front-or rear-facing slots for their respective light sensors. But the auto-dim circuit boards fit in the manual case just fine and fool the circuitry into thinking it's dark outside, both from the rear and the front, so no voltage is applied to the mirror to dim it.
Seems to be working fine, the interior lights work and the car accepts key fob commands.
Best of luck to all.

I had a look around youtube and found these guys - US$99 to have the mirror repaired seems pretty good to me. They ship worldwide which is good for me when I need to get this done.

was pretty easy to do. put a manual dimming mirror in place of the auto.
from experience:
-dont bother saving the foam separating the board and glass. Use a long sliding knife and just keep cutting around until you separate the two. Replace with two layers of foam mounting tape or however many are needed to keep the pins from scratching the mirror back
-put some lube on the manual flip switch mechanism before reassembly

Back in 2011 I received a 'repaired' self dimming mirror cell from Sybesma's Electronics, 581 Ottawa Ave - Ste 100, Holland, MI 49423
I installed it and it appeared to be working properly. i.e. automatically dimming.
I only had the car on the road for a short time after the repair/install.
I recently put the car back on the road and I don't have a lava mirror but it also is not dimming itself.
I noticed that the small 'eye'/socket on the right side did not have a opaque 'lens' in it like the left 'eye'/socket.
I sent an email and photos to show the socket and asked if something was missing, and if so, could I perhaps buy the part(s) to repair the missing 'lens'/sensor. i.e. I thought perhaps the light sensor had fallen out of the socket and that was the reason the mirror would not self dim.
Sybesma's replied that I could send the mirror to them for repair at US$97.00 They said the socket was missing an lens but that it would have no effect on the light sensing.
They suggested that perhaps the PCB board has gone bad. They said that "The left side is the power indicator on/off light of the mirror. "
I replied with the following email and they said that they only repair the mirror cell portion and not the PCB but that I could send the mirror to them for evaluation.
Can any of you answer some of my questions as noted in the email regarding lights, etc.?
"Hi Stacy,
I don't understand your comment about the left 'eye'/socket being a power indicator on/off light of the mirror
It has been more than 4 years since the original mirror became a lava lamp at which point I sent it to your company for repair.
With my bad memory, I don't remember if there ever was a light of any sort in the left 'eye' socket.
If the mirror PCB were working correctly, would there be a light 'on' in the left 'eye'/socket?
I don't have any error messages telling me that any computer is not functioning correctly on the car but I also haven't recently connected my BSR diagnostic code reader recently to look for none critical codes.
Back four years ago, when I sent the mirror assembly to your company, initially you said you could fix it and the later you said you couldn't, After a lot of back and forth emails and contact with the company which actually makes the self dimming mirror cells, I had more or less given up that you would be able to repair the mirror.
At that point, I bought a used none dimming mirror assembly off of ebay. Before I could try to install it, I got a phone call from one of your higher ups. At least I think it was a phone call, say that a working cell had been found that you would be sending my repaired mirror back to me. i.e. I never did get around to examining and/or trying to install the none dimming unit from ebay.
After I received your email below, I had another look at the none working dimming mirror in the car.
When I turn the ignition key to the position before the starter engagement position, a red symbol and the word SEATBELT comes on along the top of the mirror on the left side. At the same time the red word OFF is illuminated in the right side of the top of the mirror. I can see the words PASS AIRBAG in the area between the OFF and SEATBELT but the words are not illuminated. The light words only stay on for a short time and do not stay light when the car is running.
Is this how the mirror is supposed to function?
Should the 'eye'/socket to the left light up and stay lighted up when the key is turned and/or the engine is running?
I had a look at the ebay none dimming mirror assembly and see that it also has the two 'eye'/sockets to the left and right and the same red words about them.
I thought that the 'eye'/sockets would only be used on a dimming mirror.
If I try to install the none dimming mirror, do you know if there is a PCB inside the mirror and must I transfer the old PCB from the non functioning dimming mirror over to the none dimming mirror? i.e. I believe the PCB does more than operate the dimming function of the mirror. I believe the alarm system might also be controlled by the PCB and I don't know if the PCB's are 'tied' to individual cars. There are a bunch of wires protruding from the none dimming mirror assembly. It looks like they were just snipped off. Not sure if there is connector inside the mirror which can be unplugged from the PCB which appears to be inside the mirror.
Thks,
Dwight

OK, my problem is not leaking fluid but vertical dark streaks in the glass. It's a Magna Donnelly model # 026022. I just ordered the same model number on ebay and I'll transfer the glass from this mirror to the one in my 2008 V70.
The local Volvo dealer advertises free software upgrades with service visits but I doubt that he will update the software on a mirror that he didn't sell, right? ...so I can't just swap the whole mirror without paying for a software upgrade.
Incidentally, the ebay mirror was $85 from Erie Volvo.

Well, it's done and it was easy thanks to this thread. The only trouble I had was that I couldn't detach the mirror from the windshield. My V70 is a 2008 and I tried the technique that works for the earlier models but I just couldn't get it lose....so I left it in place and removed the mirror bezel and took out the electronic board. The rest of the repair was just as it has been described above.
I put everything back together, reconnected the battery, worked the door remote 3 times and everything works just like it should.
Thanks again for all the help on this forum.
