98 V70 front seatbelt buckle sticks

The drivers side front seat belt buckle sticks when I try to release it. I suspect that either it has dirt in it or there is a spring inside that has failed. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?

I searched the site and found that one guy shot a blast of wd40 into the mechanism and that worked for him. I'm not a big fan of wd40 since it's pretty thick and it holds onto dirt. But I suppose I could try that if nothing else works.

Use a PTFE based spray rather than WD40 in the UK with GT85 which is what I would use for this task but not too sure if that is available in the USA - Mike

I have some silicon based lubricant with graphite in it (forgot I have it) that might be a good choice after a few good blasts of compressed air. Thanks for making me think.

For anyone interested I shot a few good blasts of something meant to dissolve rust and lubricate. It worked great. The mechanism came unstuck and operated normally on the first try. I'll put some light lubricant into each of them now as a preventative treatment.

Bart @ VCNA, this one's for you.
I have this problem with all three of our Volvos including a low mileage 06. Volvo does not seem all that
concerned. You might think that a manufacturer that has touted safety since day one including all of the modern day accident avoidance systems, etc. would at least acknowledge that there is a problem,and be concerned enough about their car's owners that they might step up and help out with replacing these "safety" parts that are failing.
