2002 C70 Leak front cam seal

Post by Syd_c70 »

Hi

Can you take a look at these pics and confirm for me if the front cam seal is gone? I noticed there is oil down below past the waterpump. There is also oil on the 10mm timing belt cover screw.

Thanks

The cam seal is likely as the next possible candidate for a leak in that area is the head gasket and of course you should always shoot for the easier/inexpensive rather than the complex/expensive solutions as a first measure.

Once you find the procedure for CVVT hub removal post back here if you need any help.

Can someone check to see if they can see the crankshaft marking on my C70? I have the camshaft align already but could not see the crankshaft mark.

Thanks,

You are about 1/2 of a tooth off. The casting on the oil pump should line up at the center of the valley between the notches on the two adjacent teeth on the harmonic balancer sprocket.

About 1/2 a tooth clockwise will get you spot on.

I wrote the cam seals DIY for 1998 S79, info in forum re Volvo vs SKF seals.
Also wrote the tricks using PVC Coupler (plumbing part).

Search for CVVT sprocket removal.
There is a similar thread going on right now, see the links in that thread.

On that engine there are two marks on the crankshaft, both at the peaks, and the engine is referenced at the valley between the two.

On the earlier versions of engine there was a single notch in the valley.

In your pictures, the notches are all aligned both on the camshafts side and at the crankshaft.

The bump on the block for the crankshaft is not visible when the belt is on, you can feel it with a finger. There are two notches on the crankshaft pulley (two teeth), the bump on the block goes in between.

I could not find the "CVVT sprocket" post at all. Would you happen to have the link for it? I will tackle the job in the weekend and see how far it will get me.

Thanks,

I think this is the most recent thread, but there are tons of them here:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... et#p335908

Lee is correct about the timing marks (of course!).

The most likely source oil in that area is the PCV system, is there oil on top of the valve cover? If not, check out the front cam seal. The front cam seals do go out sometimes but it is uncommon. You need to rig up some kind of little press to install them, I use an inch and a half of 2 inch pvc pipe, a metal plate and the three cam sprocket bolts.
