1997 850 Was rear ended and dashboard mounts broke

Post by Jenrab27 »

I was told this morning by an insurance claims adjuster that having the dashboard knocked loose is not consistent with damage that occurs during a fairly low speed collision in most cars. I mentioned that this may be a typical problem with this model. How involved is the process of replacing the dash board? I have a feeling it's pretty complicated: removing air bags, heater vent hoses, wiring etc etc. The upholstery shop I took it to hasn't a clue what to charge for something like this. :o Thank you!

It is a pretty big deal. There isn't any kind of book time on repairing the mounts but there should be book time for replacing the evaporator core. About 90% of the steps to replace the evaporator core are consumed by removing and replacing the dash. A dash itself is no longer available from Volvo so the only options are to find a good salvage unit (Which is very tough) or repair the existing mounts.

Thank you Lee, I'm wondering how to repair the mounting brackets, or come up with some kind of mickey mouse metal strap/brace bolted to the ends of the dashboard that will hold it on. I agree, I've been searching for a used unit, the only place that has one locally is asking $900! This is such a popular model and apparently such a common problem that someone should come up with a clever way to fix it. Thanks again, Jen

Here is how I have dealt with it. It is a very frustrating problem.

The link also links my first attempt several years ago and there are numerous clever ideas in the threads. The bottom line is that there isn't a bottom line - there is no "RIght Way" rulebook, just various methods with many creative methods.
