Opened up my hood today and noticed a lot of dry and wet coolant around the tank, not quite sure why. I did remove the tank a couple days ago by detaching the hose and setting it off to the side to take a look at the condition of the timing belt, but I could have sworn I tightened it back down to the way it was before. The video below shows the coolant bubbling out of the hose. Hasn't dropped in level at all I just hate having coolant and stains all over the engine bay. What could the issue be? No overheating or anything either. Sorry for the background noise..neighbor was power washing his driveway. This is with the engine off

That's what happens when you mess with old car stuff that ain't broken!
What's that stuff wrapped around the hose and nipple on the tank? Anyways, remove the hose again, clean it up and tighten down. Make sure the nipple isn't cracked

If you take the hose off you will find that the plastic "nipple" on the tank will be cracked, get some good quality plastic glue, remove the clamp and hose, wipe the nipple dry and coat it with the glue and put the hose and clamp back on. Yes it is a temporary fix but the best way to do it without buying a new reservoir tank..

If you find the nipple is not cracked, try using a different type clamp backed up just a little to get a bite on just a bit of previously unclamped hose for a better seal. If the tank is indeed cracked (these are old and it's not uncommon) then it would be best to replace the tank and both its hoses at the same time if they are soft.

I'll check out the rubber nipple and make sure it's tied down properly tomorrow. Because it's not overheating or losing notice able amount is this an urgent thing to take care of or can I wait some time?

I had same problem, a new tank fixed it. Nothing else worked. Get the OE Volvo tank.

The nipple is plastic and it is molded at the same time as the tank. I have had to replace two or three of the ones in my 850s that had a crack in the nipple. They did the same thing that yours is doing.koffinb wrote:I'll check out the rubber nipple and make sure it's tied down properly tomorrow. I wouldn't set out on a cross country trip or take the car rallying with that condition but I have run mine for weeks and even months (normal city commuting) with the same leak. You don't build adequate pressure in the cooling system and you will lose a bit of coolant but it usually isn't a problem. I think I noted a change in design on the replacements where they added a brass sleeve to the nipple that wasn't there on the original.

If your reservoir is factory, then it has lived past its lifespan. In other words, this is like a human being at 110 years old.
Replace the reservoir and cap with Volvo OEM (no aftermarket) before you regret.
