'95 854T, 233,000 miles
I have had "4-4-4 Acceleration signal" code come up twice within the last 3 weeks and could use some help.
The engine runs smooth, but does need work. It uses 1 qt. oil / 700 miles and 1 qt. coolant / 500 miles.
I think the oil consumption is a valve seal issue and I'm pretty sure I have a bad head gasket from the coolant consumption as well as the exhaust smell.
Is it likely that the oil and coolant consumption is causing a 4-4-4 code?
I'm not sure just which components "Acceleration signal" refers to.
Also, I'm having a difficult time clearing the code at the box under the hood. But I can clear it with an OBD II reader.
When I attempt to clear the code under the hood, which port should I have the flywire connected to? I've been trying in the A2 and A7 port to no avail.

The proper port under the hood is A-2. You must read all of the stored codes before you try to erase them. The 4-4-4 code is an accelerometer code and there are a number of multimeter tests you can perform to figure it out.
If you don't have it, download and unzip the factory service manual from here:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/downlo ... vo_850.zip
Refer to the file named tests with codes turbo.pdf and scroll down to the procedure for code 4-4-4. It wants some additional information from the Volvo scan tool to shorten the procedure but just do it all - unless you happen to have a Volvo scan tool laying around.
The oil consumption has nothing to do with the code.

Thanks, I appreciate the help.
I've pulled codes from each port. I have some unusual readings...
A1
1-1-1 No DTC set (that's good)
A2
4-4-4 Acceleration Signal (ok, we'll start working on that per above)
But here is where it gets interesting...
A3
2-1-3 Unknown per the the code chart here on MVS
2-1-4 Unknown per the the code chart here on MVS
1-4-1 Unknown per the the code chart here on MVS
1-4-2 Unknown per the the code chart here on MVS
A6
No codes at all, not even the 1-1-1 code
A7
1-1-3 Fuel gauge open circuit (haven't noticed anything unusual with the fuel gauge)
1-2-2 Outside temp. sensor open circuit (I did see the dashboard computer flash CODE twice for a split second when switching from "outside temp" to "avg. mpg". But that was a few months ago.
Still couldn't reset the CEL under the hood after reading all these codes.
I apologize for being so long winded.
Looks like the weekend project will be diagnostics per the factory manual and take it from there.
Thanks again.

Keep in mind that the DTC codes get stored forever, until they are cleared at least. Many of your other codes could just be what I call "Legacy Codes". They are from something that happened long ago but has since been fixed. I always read the codes and then clear them, then I can see what comes back. There is a cadence to getting the codes to clear, try changing the amount of time you wait between button pushes and see if it will take.
A-3 is the ABS so see the ABS section on the manual for those codes or just go ahead and clear them.

I don't mind clearing ABS codes and am not overly concerned with whether the ABS works or not. Been driving for 38 years without ABS and figure I can probably get by in a pinch without it for now.
But when clearing codes, do I need to clear codes from A2 and then A3 and then A6 etc.?
Or does just clearing them from one port do it all?
Still going to try and track this down soon. Just have a few other issues on other cars to get to first. My problem is that I have to many cars.

The codes get cleared port by port, system by system.

Go figure. The CEL went out this morning while driving to work.
Not sure what to do now.
Will still research, but I think the pressure is off.
