2000 V70 Stripped Oil Pan Thread?

Post by jamesbeat »

I had my oil changed at a Jiffylube, and they told me that I had a stripped thread in my oil pan.
I'm 90% sure they did it too, because they mentioned it only after they had done the change

Anyway, I guess it must have got worse, because the last time they changed the oil, they had to put a temporary plug in.

While explaining to me about the temporary plug, the guy showed me the plug that he had removed from my car, and explained that it was too short, and that there were still some good threads further up inside the drain hole.

He advised me to buy a genuine Volvo drain plug, as it would be longer, and thus reach further up into the hole and engage the section of undamaged threads.

Well, I have looked at some pictures of genuine Volvo plugs, and they look exactly the same as the one he pulled from my car.

I'm stumped about what to do next.

I cannot afford to replace the drain pan for a stupid stripped thread.

I know there are some good threads further up inside the hole, so is there any such thing as an extra-long drain plug?

I have also seen drain valve kits. I believe these are used by people who change their oil frequently, but maybe it could help with my situation too?

Could I mount this type of valve onto my oil pan and forget about it, so that I do not have to disturb the drain plug threads ever again?

The Volvo drain plug threads are about an inch long. If you only lost a few threads then a long plug will be ok. I would buy a real Time- Sert for you 18mm plugs and be done with it. No reason to replace the pan. I'm assuming you don't have access to welding or brazing equipment.

No, I don't have access to welding or brazing equipment, though I am more mechanically inclined than my Jiffylube trip would suggest.

I only went there because we had just bought that car, and I didn't have the appropriate tools or a set of ramps.
I wish I had just bought everything I needed and done it myself.

Now I'm worried about doing it myself because of this stripped thread :(

I'm wondering if it might be an idea to buy a longer plug, get it torqued down correctly, and then just use one of those syphon things to do top-down oil changes from then on?

Glad to hear you are mechanically inclined. Put in a Time -sert and stop worrying.
