2001 v70 Service Engine Immediately - No CEL

Post by Armstrongs52 »

Just bought out first Volvo for my 15 yr old son. I knew it had some issue when we bought it and I think I paid appropriately for it

Anyway here is what is going on:
Previous Owner states he started it one morning, and as he was backing it out of the driveway the Service Engine System Immediately alert popped up and the car will not rev above 1500 rpms. No check engine light.

It starts fine but surges. A light tap on the gas pedal evens out the surges and it runs smoothly but will not rev above 1500 rpm - still no check engine light and no codes on my Actron reader. Is drive able but almost NO power. Barely made it up my driveway and seemed very hot after only running for 10 minutes.

Engine was a brand new long block at 85k and the trans was brand new at 98k.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

You'll need an appropriate scanner to suit the Volvo's complexities. Volvos use a protocol that many scanners don't recognise.

A cheap alternative is a ELM-327 bluetooth adapter teamed with an Android device loaded with Torque.

For a solution that is more professional try either a Autel EU-702 or a clone of Volvo's factory system the Vida software on PC teamed with a Dice reader.

Once you can post some codes up on the forum we'll be able to assist.

Thanks for the reply. Best place to get the Dice reader? I see them on eBay for about $120 and it looks like there are some free downloads of the Vida software.

Yeah, torrent downloads are "free", and one day DiCE vendor made a mistake and moved manufacture to China ;) Some DiCE units sold on eBay are quality copies, some are not. So search this forum first for recommended seller.

The whole dice/vida thing can be daunting if you're not very comfortable screwing with computers/laptops/usb and comm drivers etc. Going to a dealer/good Volvo Indy might be a better choice to get going quickly. Your ETM may be acting up etc. Getting a good code pull and posting info here will get you on the road pretty quickly. A good Volvo indy is worth their weight in gold, see if you can find somebody. Although, if you have decent Android phone/tablet the ELM-327 route is pretty easy and even worth going out and getting a decent Android tablet, make sure it has BlueTooth capability though.

If you buy Dice the Vida SW will come with it for no extra so don't bother with downlloading.

The Autel EU-702 will handle engine and transmission and also SRS & ABS systems.

Shenzhen Zeuss on Ali Express have been a solid supplier for me with around 6 Vida/Dice units supplied and more than 7 EU-702s; all working fine.

Any advice on a good ELM-327 unit? A quick search didn't show any local auto parts stores that had them. Seems to be a wide range of prices online. Will it pull codes that my Actron won't pull? I would assume it's not as good as the DiCE reader, but do most people find it good enough?

Glad I found this forum!
